Memory 30th August: Playback Theatre

This is the first public performance by the second batch students of the Mandala Drama School. 12 participants from different parts of Nepal has been selected for this batch and they have recently completed a month of this fellowship.

Memory 30th August is a program conceived together by theatre artists and family members of peoples who were made disappeared during the decade long armed conflict in Nepal to commemorate the international day against enforced disappearance. Mandala Theatre-Nepal has been organizing various programs on this day since 2015. In close coordination with the family members and other stakeholders, Mandala invites artists, activists and mass audiences to a common platform to express their solidarity on the issues of family through artistic expressions. Playback Theatre (चौतारी नाटक) is an interactive form of improvisational storytelling, based on deep listening to audience members’ personal stories.

Mandala Drama School is an academic program of Mandala Theatre-Nepal which provides a one year full-time residential course for enthusiast youths seeking to develop their career as theatre artists and teachers. The central aim of the course is to prepare sincere theatre practitioners and teachers having special focus on theatre’s capacity to transform society with a non-violent and artistic approach. Mandala has already completed the first batch of drama school in 2021 with 16 students passed out, and the second batch of drama school has started since July 2023.
