Synopsis
“Mekhi Danda” delves into a captivating chapter of history set during the Rana regime in Nepal. Back then, the term ‘village’ referred to the smallest administrative unit in the hierarchical structure. Each village functioned as an independent entity with a designated head known as the Mukhtiyar. Among such units, Rapcha village, situated in present-day Solukhumbu, serves as the focal point of our story.
The play begins with a visit from a delegation, including a Rana Mukhtiyar to Rapcha village. On their journey to Tibet via the Naangpala pass, the delegation decides to hold an assembly in the village. The Mukhtiyar addresses the villagers in the Khas-Nepali language. However, during this period, about one and a half centuries ago, Rapcha was inhabited solely by the Khaling Rai community, who only understood their native language.
As the Mukhtiyar spoke, the villagers, unable to comprehend his words, responded with “Mekhi maka sarkar… Mekhi,” meaning “Yes, sir… that’s right.” The Mukhtiyar, misunderstanding this response, became enraged and issued a decree: “What is this Mekhi? From now on, you must pay the Mekhi tax every year.”
This proclamation marked a turning point for the villagers, who felt a profound crisis as they faced a tax for speaking their own language. Determined to adapt, they resolved to learn the Khas-Nepali language. They brought a Karki family from another district, offering them land in exchange for teaching the new language. This decision introduced a different community into the village, leading to significant linguistic, cultural, social, and economic changes.
“Mekhi Danda” vividly portrays these transformations, highlighting the linguistic journey, the ensuing social harmony, and the villagers’ resilience. Through this compelling narrative, the play explores the broader themes of adaptation and unity in the face of adversity. “Mekhi Danda” is a poignant and insightful drama that brings to life the historical and cultural evolution of Rapcha village, making it a must-watch for those interested in the rich tapestry of our heritage.
